The "Humor" Behind Mental Health

People decide to joke about mental health as if it is a light topic without triggers 

This is not about using humor as a coping mechanism. This is about dropping the humor that stigmatizes mental illnesses

"Other people have it worse. You should be grateful for what you have".

“They don’t look like they have [blank], so therefore they must not be [blank]”.

“Medication and Treatement is for people who can’t tough it out; Taking time off for self-care means you are weak”

“Mental illness is a choice; You're just overreacting"

You can carefully consider your choice of words and avoid casual use of the
many commonly used terms that perpetuate negative stereotypes about mental illness.

Mental illness is so common, that it's insensitive to make inappropriate jokes about mental health.

Think twice before saying something about mental health. You don't know to which extent it could affect the people present in the conversation. 

Trusted professionals, like psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists, are trying their best to make people comfortable and encourage them to talk to them. So, when an individual facing a mental health crisis  hears these "funny" jokes, they decide not to seek help and support.
